Countering Violent Extremism and Peacebuilding

The Afghanistan CVE was a comprehensive project implemented by Reywat and its partners across all provinces of Afghanistan, focusing on countering violent extremism. The project involved a multi-faceted approach, including community engagement, media outreach, and policy advocacy. Its primary goal was to reduce the influence of extremist ideologies by promoting narratives of peace, tolerance, and coexistence. The project significantly reduced the recruitment of individuals into extremist groups, fostering stronger resilience within communities against radical ideologies. Additionally, it contributed to a broader cultural shift away from violence and towards peaceful conflict resolution. The project’s policy advocacy component also ensured that counter-extremism measures were embedded into national frameworks, laying the groundwork for sustained efforts against violent extremism in Afghanistan.

It aimed to support ISAF and ANP forces in stabilizing Kunduz province by involving local communities in peacebuilding efforts. The project sought to reduce tensions between ethnic and political groups and promote a secure environment conducive to economic development and social harmony. The project successfully created a more stable and secure environment in Kunduz, which allowed displaced persons to return and economic activities to resume. The community-driven approach fostered a sense of ownership and collaboration among local populations, reducing tensions and preventing further conflict. The success of this project in Kunduz served as a model for similar initiatives in other conflict-affected regions.

Afghanistan Peace and Reconciliation Pilot

The Afghanistan Peace and Reconciliation Pilot was part of the reformed Taliban reintegration, which aimed to reintegrate former fighters into society through education, vocational training, and employment opportunities. Reywat and its partners led this project. The project played a critical role in reducing the number of active insurgents by successfully reintegrating hundreds of former combatants into civilian life. This reintegration stabilised communities and contributed to peacebuilding efforts across Afghanistan. The project demonstrated the potential of rehabilitation and reintegration as key components of long-term peace strategies.

The project aimed to improve the legal framework, enhance the capacity of legal practitioners, and ensure that justice was accessible to all citizens, especially in remote and underserved areas. The project had a profound impact on the Afghan legal system by increasing the professionalism of judges, lawyers, and police officers, which, in turn, improved the efficiency and fairness of legal proceedings. Public trust in the justice system grew as legal aid services expanded and more cases were resolved through formal channels. This led to a significant reduction in corruption and an increase in the overall effectiveness of the justice system.
